Can Illness be Caused by Poor Oral Health?

While some mystery still exists, a clear link between gum disease and systemic health concerns has been established. Several credible university studies have shown a correlation between oral health and the following conditions:

  • Heart Disease
  • Respiratory Illness
  • Diabetes
  • Premature Labor and Delivery

What is the Connection?

Healthy gums keep potentially harmful bacteria limited to the soft tissues of the mouth and support teeth. Compromised gums can lead to chronic inflammation, infections, and eventual tooth loss.

One theory of how these oral bacteria reach other organs is that the irritated gums become porous and allow the bacteria to enter the bloodstream. Another possible pathway is through inhalation, by which bacteria can reach the heart and lungs.

Chronic inflammation contributed to poor blood sugar balance, and vice-versa, this makes gum disease a trigger for worsening diabetes and diabetics more prone to develop gum disease.

Gum disease also produces enzymes that are similar in composition to those created during the last stage of pregnancy, combining with them to indicate that it’s time to deliver.

Keeping Yourself Healthy from Your Tongue to Your Toes

Keeping your gums and teeth free from infection, plaque, and tartar buildup is vital to the longevity and appeal of your smile, and it supports your overall health.

It’s incredibly important to start protecting your smile at a young age to avoid issues down the road. A vigilant home hygiene routine is essential for healthy teeth and gums, as is regular visits to the dentist.

Best practices include brushing twice a day, flossing at least once, and rinsing with antiseptic mouthwash. Brushing removes plaque buildup before it can harden to tartar, and clears away sugars and other food particles before they can harm teeth. Flossing reaches deep below the gums to remove bacteria, plaque, and food particles difficult for brushing. Non-alcoholic antiseptic mouthwash eliminates harmful bacteria and helps patients freshen their breath.
